15th ANNUAL TEN COMMANDMENTS HIKE PDF Print

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

This is an exciting event that will compete also with Bechtel Engineering Pin Day (for Webelos Scouts), BALOO and OWL training (for adult leaders wishing to lead a camp-out) and the Arrow of Light that evening for Webelos II (and the rest of the Pack). For what it is worth, the Hike ends up at 4:00 pm, well in time for scouts to make the Arrow of Light ceremony that evening.

The Sam Houston Area Council is hosting the Fifteenth Annual Ten Commandments Hike in conjunction with Scout Sunday. We anticipate having three separate hikes in three different areas of the Sam Houston Area Council. Our traditional hike (The Downtown Hike) will feature some of the most beautiful older churches South and West of Downtown Houston (the West University-Sunset area). Our second hike (The North Hike) will take place in the Kingwood area. The North Hike will meander through the wooded areas of Kingwood and view newer sanctuaries with somewhat more modern motifs. Our Southwest Hike is scheduled for Sugar Land and will also include newer sanctuaries including a Hindu temple in years’ past. Scouts, parents, and others, while enjoying these historic and the newer churches, will hear the presenter for each church, temple or synagogue explain the history and distinctive nature of their religious belief along with a brief explanation of the unique concepts of that church’s teachings, history, and an explanation of one of the commandments.

Meet Cub & Boy Scout Requirements as follows: Cub Wolf: #10a, 11b, 11c, Cub Bear: #10a, #12b, d, e & #18f, g, Webelos: #8e partial for Arrow of Light, Scout Tenderfoot: #5 & #9, Scout 2nd Class: #2a & #1b, Scout 1st Class: #1-partial & #3. It is the responsibility of the Cub’s parents or the Scout’s adult leader to signoff on the completion of these requirements

Put the “Ten Commandments Hike” on your Unit calendar and sign up Early! You can add other participants as you receive them. The event is open to all youth; Cub, Boy and Venture Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church Youth and Sunday School groups, school, 4-H Groups, or any other interested youth organizations. Space is limited, some hike’s will fill and close early. The event is a “rain-or-shine event”.
