The Pack 616 Spring 2007 Family Campout will be Saturday March 31, 2006 through Sunday morning April 1, 2006 at Bastrop State Park. Optional camping is also available for Friday March 30th for people wanting to do a two night campout. The campouts are one of the greatest scouting events, so please consider attending. The whole family is invited

For Bastrop Park information and directions see their website. Simple direction are at the bottom of this article.

Our Pack has reserved and paid for 5 campsites for Friday and Saturday nights (Dear Run camping area) and an additional 9 sites for Saturday night (Copperas Creek camping area). Each site will accommodate 8 people and 2 vehicles. The nine sites for Saturday night allow tents, trailers, and motor homes. The emphasis will be on tent camping; but if you do bring a trailer please be sure to allow room for others from the Pack to share your site if necessary. Please let us know if you will not be camping in a tent as last year we were able to move every one to the DEAR RUN camping area and will do the same this year if given the opportunity. These sites contain a picnic table, fire ring, lantern holder, and drinking water faucet. Toilets and showers are within walking distance. Consider bringing a tarp or other temporary shelter (available at stores like Academy) to use in case it rains. We will have a Nature hike Saturday morning on the Scenic Overlook Trail.  We will have our Pack campfire Saturday night, with an afternoon full of scout activities. The daytime activities on Saturday will be at the Dear Run Camping Area.  If you do not want to camp, please consider coming out Saturday morning and stay for the campfire - it will be worth it.

The event will be as fun as we make it. Each Den should prepare a short daytime activity to host for the scouts and their siblings. Ideas include Treasure hunt using a compass or directions (if someone wants this I have a great idea on the treasure), Obstacle course, tug-a-war, water rocket launchers, earning belt loops, craft making, games and sports, fire building, outdoor cooking, nature activities. This is intended to keep all the kids busy from lunchtime until dinner time. We will also have a water gun fight so everyone bring your water guns. The boys will get soaked in this and loved it last year!

Each Den should prepare a skit to perform at the campfire.
Each family should bring, food, drinks (nonalcoholic), cooking and camping gear, rain wear, flashlights, first aid kit, extra shoes and clothes, ...

Each Den should also bring fire wood - its available for purchase on HWY 90 near Pecan Grove. Each family and/or Den should also plan its meals. No liquid fuel stoves/lanterns are allowed, but you can use propane-type stoves and lanterns or a campfire for cooking.

All Pack 616 scouts and their families are invited to attend. Please sign up with your Den leader and he/she can pass the information on to me. Signups from people are accepted for those who completed Class 1 medical form for each camper and a permission slip for each scout and sibling. The Blue and Gold and March Pack meetings will be great times to sign up. If you have already provided a Class 1 medical form from the Fall camp out at Bastrop you only need the permission slip.

We also need the following:
An MC to lead songs for the camp fire, someone to bring fire wood for the pack camp fire, someone to organize water and snacks to be available at the lookout (trail hike) when the hikers arrive, someone to organize the water gun fight.
More information will follow.

FEES
The only fee will be your entrance into the park. 12 and under are Free. The Pack will be paying for all campsites.

DIRECTIONS
Take I-10 west and exit HWY 71 North (around Columbus)
Continue on 71 North and exit Loop 150 (past Smithville but before Bastrop)
From Loop 150 look for the park on the Right just before you get to HWY 21
This is about a 2 hour drive. All Family's are responsible for transportation of their family to and from the campout.
